27 Million
27 million. That's how many people are in slavery today. Right now. Maybe not far from you. Maybe you didn't know. Not many people do. Slavery still exists and is more rampant than ever. There have never been this many slaves at any time in history. Ever. And it has to stop. We have to stand up for the 27 million men, women, and children that are in captivity right now.
Passion conferences in Atlanta, Georgia, started by Louie Giglio, started taking a stand against modern day slavery three years ago when they themed that Passion conference and the two that would follow, after and started the #enditmovement. They now are in support of at least 10 organizations that are in the fight against modern day slavery. Last year, I had the privilege to go to Passion, and while we were there, we were able to be a voice of those that are suffering in slavery. Those voices that have been silenced. We raised our voices. In the dark of the night, at the end of a great week of learning about and praising our Lord and learning about slavery, we stood quietly outside the Georgia dome. There were 60,000 of us college students standing quietly in the night as one by one, the candles we each held were lit. It was silent. And cold. But we were excited for what was to come. We were standing around a gigantic four sided screen that was showing pictures of all those who had Instagramed the moment they donated money to causes that are trying to stop slavery and minister to people. We ended up raising over 3 million dollars for organizations fighting slavery! There was then a video shown that reminded us what we were about to do. And we had to continue to be silent until that moment. Gradually we stared hearing a helicopter in the distance coming toward where we were all waiting. Waiting until the exact moment that we were to stand up for the 27 million. Then it happened. As the video ended, a light beam shot three miles into the sky! The screen then said, "SHOUT," and that's what we did. For minutes, we shouted and yelled for those who had no voice! We were heard and our light was seen from miles away. It was the kind of thing that gives you uncontrollable, unstoppable goosebumps! It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it. "It shook heaven and earth," said Louie Giglio in CNN's interview last year.
That year on Human Trafficking Awareness day (February 27), we went dark on social media in order to shine a light on slavery. We posted the day before we went black, "Tomorrow we disappear for the day from social media, in honor of the 27 million who've disappeared because of slavery. #enditmovement" And that day right before, " X #enditmovement" The day after, we came back on to social media saying this, "Yesterday we disappeared for the day. Today, we're back to Shine a Light in the darkness for the 27 million. #enditmovement"
This year, on Slavery Awareness Day (February 27), we didn't go black, but instead wore #enditmovement gear and drew red 'X's' on our hands to show that we're "In it to End it."
We did still change our media pics like last year, but this time the X's were.... wait for it... Red! Who knew, right?
These things have all been in efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking and slavery. We know that awareness itself won't end slavery, but through awareness, people find out about organizations like IJM, Slavery Footprint, and so many more that are working currently to stop slavery! As Louie Giglio said in his interview with CNN in 2013, "awareness is the first step to getting engaged in the process" of ending modern day slavery! It's amazing what you can do when you finally realize what your slavery footprint is. Hopefully we have shone a light on slavery and are continuing to do so! I'm IN IT TO END IT! Are you?
